Swiss Vote on Special Prosecutor for Animals

| by

An angler in Switzerland has been accused of torturing a fish.  Why?  Because it took him 10 minutes to land a pike that he had caught.

Sound absurd?  Well, on March 7 of this year, the Swiss will decide whether to appoint a special prosecutor to represent the interests of vertebrates that have been abused by humans.  The angler has found himself caught up in the unfolding legal drama.

Lawyer Antoine F. Goetschel has agreed to represent the pike.  Since animals cannot pay, the taxpayers of the canton of Zurich pick up the bill for Mr. Goetschel’s fees, which by Swiss standards are said to be quite reasonable.
