Pee on Your Phone: New STD Testing App

| by Mark Berman Opposing Views

Is there anything smart phones can't do? Soon they will be able to test for sexually transmitted diseases.

Health officials in the United Kingdom are working on technology that would allow you to test yourself for STDs on your phone. It seems the rate of STDs is rising among young people in the UK. Since many of them are embarrassed to get checked, they just pass them along to others.

But soon people will be able to check themselves. They will simply put urine or saliva onto a computer chip about the size of a USB card, plug it into their phone or computer and receive a diagnosis within minutes.

Officials hope to target tech-savvy young people with the self-test. STDs are reaching record numbers in the UK, and two-thirds of the women and half of the men reporting new STDs are younger than 25.

Developers hope to sell the test for as little as 50 pence to one pound (80 cents to $1.60) in vending machines in nightclubs, pharmacies and in supermarkets, as condoms are.
