A Closer Look at Tottenham's Struggles

| by

For over half the season Tottenham were one of the revelations of the English Premier League. Attacking with flare through the creativity of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon. Quality play in front of goal with Adebayor and Rafael Van der Vaart. Backstopped by a top notch defense and keeper Brad Friedel.

The wins came in bunches and Tottenham found themselves in the midst of a EPL title race, just a few points behind leaders Manchester City and Manchester United. But what a difference a month has made. Tottenham have clearly lost their way. So much so that they have fallen out of sight of the two leaders and have even been passed for third by Arsenal. Their last four EPL matches have produced a single draw and three losses.

"We just seem to have lost our way a little bit," Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports. "We are not playing with quite the same fluency that we were a few weeks ago. It's difficult to put your finger on it. One or two of us look a bit jaded."

With a trip to Chelsea on the weekend, things are not getting any easier. Lose there and Tottenham will find themselves only two points above Chelsea for fourth place and a coveted Champions League place.

Fall out of fourth and the wheels come off clearly. At that point the futures of stars such as Gareth Bale and Luka Modric will be called into question as they will be in high demand from other deep-pocketed Champions League qualifiers.

Hopefully Tottenham can right the boat. After Chelsea the schedule gets a bit friendlier with no matches remaining against the top eight to close the season.
