Bahrain Needed 9 Goals to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive, Won Game 10-0; FIFA Investigating
Bahrain needed three things to happen in order to keep its World Cup hopes alive: a victory over Indonesia, for Qatar to lose its game versus Iran and to somehow make up the fact that it trailed Qatar by nine points in the group standings. Bahrain accomplished two of the things on that list, but ultimately watched Qatar play to a 2-2 draw against Iran and eventually advance to the next stage of the Asian qualifying tournament.
While beating a weak Indonesian team isn’t a particularly impressive feat, looking at the final score, you can’t help but be wary of the fact that Bahrain defeated its opponents 10-0. Given the margin that the win needed to be by and the margin that it ultimately was, many -- including FIFA -- are now wondering if there was something shady going on at Wednesday’s showdown.
On Thursday, soccer’s governing body announced it would be launching an investigation into what happened.
"FIFA will conduct a routine examination of this game and its result," a spokesman told BBC Sport.
"[This is due to] the unusual outcome in relation to the result expectation and head-to-head history - and in the interests of maintaining unequivocal confidence in our game."
Considering the fact that FIFA investigations are notoriously awful and that the investigators involved generally can't find their own belly buttons, don’t hold your breath for any real scrutiny over what transpired.
