Purses and Backpacks No Longer Allowed In NFL Stadiums

The National Football League has announced a controversial rule change that has nothing to do with what happens on the field. The league has set forth a new policy that puts limits on the size and type of bags that can be brought into stadiums — a move that might not go over well with female fans.

This is part of the statement outlining the policy.

Beginning with preseason games, fans will be able to carry the following style and size bag, package, or container at stadium plaza areas, stadium gates, or when approaching queue lines of fans awaiting entry into the stadium:

Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12.” (Official NFL team logo clear plastic tote bags will be available through club merchandise outlets or at nflshop.com), or

One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).

Under the new rules, women will no longer be allowed to carry standard-size purses into games. There are also many other items that will no longer be permitted.

"Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, seat cushions, luggage of any kind, computer bags and camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size."

NFL officials believe the new policy will make the stadium experience safer.

"By taking this minor step we create a major improvement," said Jeffrey Miller, the league's chief security officer. "It really does dramatically increase our security posture at our stadiums. We'd be the first professional sports league to do this across the board, but I suspect that the other sports will also look very closely at this. And I wouldn't be surprised to see them implement similar measures."

The Boston Marathon bombings in April played a role in the NFL’s decision,  ABC News reported.
