Ryan Lochte's Sister, Megan, is Either Racist or Just Amazingly Unfunny (Video)

| by Alex Groberman

Late Friday afternoon, video of Ryan Lochte’s sister, Megan, taking part in an interview for some random talk show began to circulate around the web. In this clip, Megan could be seen spouting off a bunch of racist, incendiary commentary about Asians, and notably invoking slurs on more than one occasion.

As you would expect, folks weren’t impressed.

Take it in for yourselves (via The Big Lead):

Shortly after the clip reached viral sensation status, Megan did an interview with Celebuzz in which they attempted to clear this mess up once and for all. Via the report:

The video was recorded in 2008. “During that time, I played a character on a television comedy show called Closing Time TV, which was a show with different comedy skits, fake news skits and staged interviews,” Megan explained. “The video in question reflects a skit from the show in which I acted as an ignorant guest on a talk show that made ignorant comments.”

While many have slammed the apparent racist ramblings in the video, Locthe’s sister says script was meant to shed light on such narrow-mindedness. “The intent was to make fun of the ignorance of people who actually do not have an understanding of other cultures and speak in racist ways,” said Megan. “The skit and my character were supposed to be making fun of ignorance.”

So there you go. Is she telling the truth about the motivation behind that video? I don’t know. Maybe. Probably. You kind of naturally want to give people the benefit of the doubt in these types of situations.

That said, the “I was just trying be absurd” excuse seems to be used really frequently by people who say outrageous things without realizing how big of a stir those outrageous things will cause. Rush Limbaugh recently used the same excuse in regards to his Sandra Fluke comments.

At the end of the day, is Ryan Lochte’s sister either being a racist or just an unfunny, bad actress really that big a deal? Nah. But it does still make you cringe that people would a.) put something like that together and, b.) then actually publish it without getting how it would be interpreted. (And just to smack down the inevitable excuse that will likely be posted in the comments section: when this many people interpreted the clip in a particular way, there’s a reason for that.)

Whatever, though. I think it's officially okay to stop caring about the Lochte family until 2016 now.

All in favor say jeah.
