Freestyle skier Sarah Burke died on Thursday from injuries sustained during an accident nine days ago.
The 29-year-old Burke was initially injured back on Jan. 10 while participating in a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.
According to USA Today, Burke tore her vertebral artery in the accident – which in turn led to bleeding on the brain and eventual cardiac arrest. CPR was performed by paramedics on the scene; unfortunately, she ultimately succumbed to “irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest” at 9:22 a.m., Thursday.
Burke’s publicist, Nicole Wool, issued a statement on the death:

“The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched.”
Burke’s organs and tissue will reportedly be donated, as per her request.
Back in 2007, Burke won an ESPY for being the top female action sports athlete of the year. She has consistently been regarded as a mainstream pioneer for her sport, and a favorite in just about any competition she entered.
