Fresh off a relatively successful campaign at this year’s Olympics, Justin Gatlin was expected to perform well in his remaining 2012 sprinting competitions.
Expected is operative word there.
Unfortunately, it appears as though the American bronze-medalist won’t be able to capitalize on his successful London Games showing. According to ESPN, he is going to miss the rest of the year with an illness of some sort. Details regarding what specifically is bothering him remain scarce at the moment, but here is what’s being reported:
Gatlin was treated for stomach pains and fever at a hospital in Austria this week.
Athletissima organizers say in a statement that "his situation has not improved." They say Gatlin "has taken the decision to return to the USA, withdrawing from the meeting in Lausanne as well as ending his season."
Gatlin was scheduled to race this week at the Athletissima meet in Switzerland against Jamaica’s Yohan Blake and American teammate Tyson Gay. Obviously that’s not going to happen now.
We’ll keep you updated on this situation as it continues to develop.
