2012 Kentucky Derby Murder Mystery: Dead Body Found in Churchill Downs Barn

| by Alex Groberman

I’ll Have Another stole the show with a thrilling victory over second-place finisher Bodemeister at the 2012 Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Unfortunately, that’s not the most interesting story coming out of this weekend’s big event. Rather, the most interesting story coming out of this year’s Derby is the discovery of a man’s body in the stable area of Churchill downs on Sunday morning – reportedly not far from where I’ll Have Another was stabled.

Churchill Downs security phoned in the finding at 4:50 a.m. eastern time, as per some reports. Others have the time as slightly after 5:00 a.m. eastern time.

As of this very moment, details about the death are scarce. However, authorities have acknowledged that the death is being investigated as a homicide and that there were apparently no obvious signs of a struggle.

"At this point we don't have anything pointing to the fact that this had any association with Churchill Downs or the Derby itself," said Alicia Smiley, spokewoman for Louisville Metro Police (via The Hour).

So far, the man hasn’t been identified; authorities are noting that he was Hispanic, though.

According to some reports, the barn in which the body was found belonged to Angel Montano Sr. The Louisville-based trainer did not have a horse in Saturday’s proceedings.

We'll have more details as they come in.

Update: According to MSNBC, authorities are now saying there were signs of an altercation.

"He did sustain injuries that lead us to believe he was involved in some type of altercation," Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley told NBC.

"[Detectives] were able to determine that there is foul play involved, however we still do not have an exact cause of death and we'll have to await the coroner's report for those details."

Update 2: The body has been identified. Adan Fabian Perez, 48, was identified by his 19-year-old son after news of his death hit the newswire.
