Dieter Strack, 74, died on Monday after being struck in the throat by a poorly thrown javelin at a youth meet. He was rushed to the hospital almost immediately, however, by the time he arrived, there was nothing the doctors could do.
Authorities are still investigating what specifically happened but, at the moment, it looks like it was just a freak accident.
On top of the 800+ people that were on scene, Strack’s 18-year-old granddaughter Fiona was also due to compete at the championships.
"The popular and experienced sports judge was the victim of a tragic accident while carrying out his duties on Aug. 26," the local association that put the event on said on its website. "All of us who were there are horrified and in shock." It also described Strack as a "much-loved and experienced" sports judge.
The unnamed kid who threw the javelin is reportedly (and understandably) receiving psychological counseling.
