NHL Referee Cameras Make Fantastic Debut (Video)

The NHL debuted a futuristic new addition to their game last night. For the first time ever, referees wore cameras mounted on their helmets. Footage from the cameras was shown during the Canadian broadcast of two of last night’s NHL opening games.

The cameras, which were provided by GoPro, gave fans an ice-level perspective on the game they’d never been able to see until now.

Here are two other videos unearthed by CBS Sports of the camera footage. The first shows a fight during the Flames – Canucks games:

The second shows a goal by Canucks forward Radim Vrbata. Referee Tim Peel, who was wearing the camera, initially called Vrbata for a high stick penalty on the goal. When you see the play from his angle it’s easy to see why:
