Why Won't the Jets Bench Mark Sanchez, Start Tim Tebow?
“Mark Sanchez is our quarterback.”
Head coach Rex Ryan spoke those words once again Sunday after the Jets suffered yet another humbling loss at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks yesterday 28-7. Why? Only Ryan seems to know.
The only reason the Jets were not shut out Sunday was because the Jets defense scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery in the 1st quarter. In fact, the Jets offense put up 0 points and has now only scored only 9 total points in the last 8 quarters.
Now, I know that there is more to the Jets struggles than Mark Sanchez, but yesterday Sanchez was a miserable 9 for 22 with a fumble, interception in the end zone, and once again, 0 points. Sanchez has now completed less than 50% of his passes in 5 of the Jets 9 games (4 of those games being losses coincidently). Not only that, but after his two turnovers yesterday, Sanchez now has 17 in 9 games.
So what am I missing? What exactly is Sanchez doing that Tim Tebow couldn’t do? Lets break it down:
Sanchez is turning the ball over at a sickening rate-
-While Tebow’s struggles throwing the ball were well-documented last year, he was relatively conservative when it came to turning the ball over. If you take away one game against Buffalo, Tebow only had 8 turnovers in 11 games.
Sanchez is struggling in the red zone-
-Sanchez owns a passer rating of 52 in the red zone this year and has thrown 4 interceptions inside the 20. Last year, in the red zone, Tebow had a 65.4 passer rating with only 2 interceptions (in 12 games compared to Sanchez’z 9) AND Tebow was able to use his legs to score 6 rushing touchdowns in the red zone, while Sanchez has 0.
The Jets haven’t been able to create a consistent run game-
-Obviously this is somewhat out of Sanchez’s control, but the past shows us it wouldn’t necessarily be out of Tebow’s. Last year, after taking over for Kyle Orton, Tebow turned the Broncos into the #1 rushing attack in the league. As it stands right now, even when the Jets’ opponents KNOW Tebow is coming in to run, he is still averaging 3.5 yards a carry. Rex Ryan wants to establish a consistent running game. That is something everyone knows Tebow can do.
The Jets haven’t been able to keep their defense off the field-
-The Jets are already at the bottom of the league as far as 3 and outs go. So Tebow can’t really hurt them in this area. At least if Tebow is in, and the Jets are most likely running the ball more and they might be able to eat up some more clock and give their defense a little more time on the sideline each game.
The list goes on and on. You would be hard pressed to find an encouraging statistic regarding Mark Sanchez or the Jets offense at this point. That’s what makes Ryan’s hesitancy to make a switch so confusing. What exactly does he think he would be risking? The offense literally cannot get any worse than it has been the last two weeks.
Funny story, next week is “Faith and Family” day when the Jets take on the Rams in St Louis. Hopefully, for the Jets sake, Rex Ryan knows that and doesn’t see it as a coincidence.

Hey djrickroy........the
Hey djrickroy........the broncos were 1-4 when tebow took over as the starter, look it up.He was 7-4 as the starter in the regular season. Coach fox was spouting the same BS about Orton "he gives us the best chance to win" right before he went the remainder of the season with Tebow. People just spout off regurgitated BS about Tebow. He needs to be given a chance, guareented he'll do better than sanchez. Wins are all that matter.
Disagree completely. Not a
Disagree completely. Not a Sanchez apologist but you have to look at the facts. Each year the RB, FB, WR, and OL talent around him has gotten worse. Everyone killed Schottenhiemer, but Sparano doesn’t have a clue. This two quarterback system is a joke, what other successful team in the NFL does this? No one that’s who. Tom Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Eli, etc. never get pulled off the field for a gimmick offense. The problems on this team go beyond Sanchez, who has not played well either, but you cant put the blame on him solely. Tebow wasn’t successful in Denver, he had an 8-8 record and the defense carried that team. They beat Pittsburgh b/c of home field and all of the Steelers injuries on defense. Everyone is quick to say that Tim Tebow won a playoff game. Newsflash, Sanchez won four, all on the road. Tebow got embarrassed in the second round at New England. Do we forget what Sanchez did in the 2010 playoffs at NE (3 TD passes). Tebow is a joke and didn’t belong in NY in the first place. The time to bench Sanchez was in his first, even second year but Rex didn’t do it then, so by year 4 he cant do it either. Now they have to stick with him and only him, no more wildcat.
First off, thanks for reading
First off, thanks for reading and responding!
I agree with you that the blame does not go solely on Sanchez. They have had injuries and he does lack talent around him. However, Sanchez has played pretty poorly himself.
My question is: What's the worst that happens if you let Tebow start a game or two?
They have been losing big as it is. So, the worst that happens is they lose again with Tebow playing absolutely terrible. If that happens, I believe they could still go back to Sanchez, because Sanchez will be able to breathe easier, having seen Tebow fail miserably.
I am not saying Tebow is the answer, I am just saying it feels like the Jets have nothing to lose by giving him a shot.
Valid argument, but you cant
Valid argument, but you cant go to Tebow and then go back to Sanchez. Sanchez is a prideful guy; he was the starting quarterback in a major market for 3+ years and has had success in his first two years. Everyone knows Tim Tebow is not a quarterback; he is a football player (per many accomplished NFL quarterbacks). You replace him with Tebow and you lose him forever as the Jets QB. Not to mention this could cause a major divide in the locker room. Rex says he's my guy then he benches him? No player will ever believe anything out of Rex's mouth again. Just my thoughts. I've been a jets fan for 10+ years and it’s always the same thing, the fans want the backup until they see the backup isn’t any good.
I was under that belief for a
I was under that belief for a while too. But now it's starting to appear as if Sanchez is going to be lost as long as Tebow is on the team period and the Jets already blew their chance of trading Tebow. So maybe letting Tebow fail would be the best possible thing for Sanchez....
I agree Victoria. The worst
I agree Victoria. The worst case scenario: Tebow plays extremely poorly, then they go back to Sanchez, who will feel more confident/safer after having seen Tebow fail.
