ESPN First Take’s Skip Bayless is a professional troll, we all know this. He purposely says outrageous things as much as he can to generate headlines and additional attention for his awful, awful show. His schtick grew old about 10 seconds after he started using it, but, for whatever reason, it speaks to people.
If it didn’t, he wouldn’t still be around.
Sometimes Bayless doesn’t just say stuff for dramatic effect, though. Sometimes he says what he truly, honestly believes. You know he’s being genuine in those cases because, usually, it has nothing to do with LeBron James or Tim Tebow. It’s in those rare instances that you get a window into how he actually thinks – and we got one of those infrequent windows during today’s show.
Here is what Bayless had to say on the topic of some Washington Redskins fans preferring rookie backup quarterback Kirk Cousins to rookie backup quarterback Robert Griffin III (via Larry Brown Sports):
“I’m going to throw it out there,” Bayless said. “You also have the black/white dynamic and the majority of Redskins fans are white and it’s just human nature if you’re white to root for the white guy because it just happens in sports. Just like the black community will root for the black quarterback.
“I’m for the black guy. I’m just saying I don’t like the dynamic for RG3. It could stunt his growth in the NFL.”
So Redskins fans will purposely root for Cousins over Griffin, even if they believe Griffin is the better player? Fans of a franchise that’s as perennially awful as the Redskins would actually pass up the opportunity to support a winning quarterback just because his skin color is different from theirs? Wow.
Does that work in reverse, too? Do black Seattle Seahawks fans pray that Tarvaris Jackson gets the starting spot over Matt Flynn?
Fans want their team to win. Redskins fans are no exception. Anyone who says differently isn’t speaking for the fan base – they’re just speaking for themselves.
