New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is splitting from his wife of nearly 20 years.
According to multiple reports, Payton filed for divorce from his wife, Beth, on June 14 – just a few weeks shy of the pair’s 20th anniversary. While the specific reason for the divorce isn’t known at the moment, records indicate that the official justification was, “discord or conflict of personalities between Petitioner and Respondent that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship."
Per CBS, Beth filed a counter-petition on June in 26 in response to her husband’s request for joint custody. She wants to be appointed the parent "who has the exclusive right to designate the primary residence of the children in Tarrant County, Texas."
As noted by ESPN, the divorce filing indicates that Payton has already moved out of the Texas home that he bought back in February of 2011. His wife and two children apparently still reside there, however.
Payton is currently serving a one-year suspension from the NFL for his role in the Saints’ now-infamous bounty scandal. His punishment officially began on April 16 of this year, and it runs through the 2012 Super Bowl.
When his suspension was originally handed down, Payton insisted that he would use his newfound free time to get more involved with his family. Obviously this latest development will make that a little more complicated.
