Despite the fact that he essentially represents everything the franchise has spent the last decade avoiding, the New England Patriots are very invested in Rob Gronkowski.

Last June, after he set the record for most touchdowns by a tight end in a single season, the Patriots rewarded their 23-year-old star with a six-year, $54 million deal.

Gronkowski’s contract was interesting for a couple of reasons.

One, because aside from Tom Brady, New England has spent the better part of the last 10 years avoiding giving too much money to any one player. Making Gronkowski the richest player in the history of his position obviously doesn’t fit that idea.

And two, just because of the type of person that Gronkowski is. Basically, this guy is the bro’est of bros in all the land. He loves to drink. He loves to party. He loves porn stars. He loves the combination of those three things on any given night. Putting aside his undeniable physical gifts, Gronkowski’s personality made the Patriots’ decision to invest in him so heavily bizarre.

They did so anyway, though.

A left arm injury caused Gronkowski to miss significant chunks of the 2012 season and his team’s postseason run. The general assumption heading into the offseason was that he should be doing everything possible to get healthy right now, as the Patriots desperately need him to be 100 percent next year.

Has he been getting healthy? Well…

Yup, that’s just Gronkowski wrestling some dude and falling on his broken forearm. No big deal.

Good luck with that $54 million deal, New England.
