What we witnessed yesterday at Gillette Stadium was the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII on steroids. Instead of three lead changes in the fourth quarter we got four. Instead on two lead changes in the last five minutes we got three. While the Jake Ballard catch over the middle was not nearly as acrobatic as David Tyree’s catch was 45 months ago it was still pretty great and it came on 3rd and 10 not 3rd and 5.
And did Super Bowl XLII contain a heart stopping 4th and 8 touchdown pass by Tom Brady to give the Patriots the lead with less than two minutes to go or a 3rd and goal touchdown pass from the inch line by Eli Manning to win the game for the Giants? I don’t think so. While the stakes were not nearly as high yesterday as they were in Glendale, AZ the ending was that much better.
Eli Manning’s stat line from Super Bowl XLII: 19-34 for 250 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Manning’s stat line yesterday: 20-39 for 255 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 INT. No steroids here, just eerie similarities.
One more. The Giants ended the Pats 20 game regular season home winning streak yesterday just like they ended their perfect 2007 season in the Super Bowl. Ok I’m done.

The Jets 27-11 win in Buffalo coupled with the aforementioned loss by the Patriots has stunningly put the Jets in a three way tie for first place in the AFC East. This is the same team that was 2-3 and trailed both the Bills and Pats by two games four weeks ago. New York has the momentum right now but a loss to New England next week at MetLife Stadium would effectively put them two games behind the Patriots. The Jets lost in New England back on Oct. 9.
More than any other position, running backs tend to come out of nowhere. That is a big reason why they are not a popular 1st round choice in the NFL Draft. Another back officially came out of nowhere yesterday. DeMarco Murray was impressive in his first two NFL starts against the Rams and Eagles but both of those teams are awful against the run. Despite their 2-6 record, the Seahawks were the best team in the NFL against the run this year allowing only 3.2 yards per carry. Murray gauged them for 139 yards on 22 carries.
The Cowboys have thought for the last three plus years that Felix Jones was the guy they should hand the running back reins to for the next five years but instead it turns out that Murray may be the guy. Hopefully he can withstand the injuries that have derailed Jones because I think that is all that stands in the way of him being a top 10 back.
I mentioned last week that the Bengals would have a chance to prove their the real deal with three straight games against winning teams, two of which being on the road. Well yesterday’s victory in Tennessee not only continued to justify their record but they also once again showed a killer instinct not usually found in young teams led by a rookie QB. For the second week in a row, Cincinnati scored 17 unanswered points on the road to close the game but this time it allowed them to turn a 10-point half-time deficit into a seven-point win.
