Michael Crabtree Accused of Sexual Assualt
The Atlanta Falcons know all too well what can happen when one of their players have a run-in with the law. On the night before the 1999 Super Bowl, Falcons DB Eugene Robinson was arrested for propositioning a prostitute. This one act knocked the Falcons off of their game and affected the Falcons so much that they never had a chance against the Denver Broncos.
This situation has a few parallels but is definitely a different situation. First of all, while this allegation has come to light prior to the game it isn't the night before the game and it also didn't involve an arrest of a player. In Robinson's case, he was caught in the act. In Crabtree's case, this is an allegation that may or may not be true.
Crabtree is also not a team leader like Robinson was so it's not going to have an impact on the entire team like the Robinson situation did. Robinson was thought of as a stand-up guy, while Crabtree has more of a rep as a prima-dona. I think there was more of a shock factor with Robinson than there is in this situation with Crabtree, especially since it's still at the allegation stage.
Crabtree did travel with the San Francisco 49ers on their plane to Atlanta so there doesn't seem to be any change in the 49ers plans due to Crabtree. It will be interesting to see if this affects the game, how Crabtree plays and in the long run... innocent until proven guilty but if he is indeed guilty he should be fitting himself for a new jumpsuit.
