In 2005 former Miami Dolphins quarterback and current CBS sports broadcaster Dan Marino had a child with a production assistant he met on the job. Marino, married with six children of his own, paid Donna Savaeterre millions to care for child and asked her to move out of state to Texas as part of the deal, according to sources.
“They had an affair, and she had a baby,” said a source with knowledge of the situation. “Everything was on the down-low and secretive.”
News about the affair and the child, seven-year-old Chloe, had been largely under wraps up until this point. The news becoming public certainly will give Marino something else to think about besides Xs and Os while he covers the Super Bowl this weekend.
Marino didn’t speak on the matter, but confirmed the affair and his financial obligations in the matter in a written statement, saying “This is a personal and private matter. I take full responsibility both personally and financially for my actions now as I did then.
“We mutually agreed to keep our arrangement private to protect all parties involved.”
The former QB insists that despite the indiscretion and the cover-up, his marriage of 28 years is a still a strong one. “My wife and I have been married for almost 30 years and have six children together,” he wrote. “And we continue to be a strong and loving family.”
It’s not known exactly how much Marino had to pay out as part of the agreement or if he is still paying, but it sounds as though he has had some contact with his young daughter.
“They would have impromptu meetings, which was part of the deal,” the source said. Savaterre has since gotten married and had another child.
