Photo: Chiefs Hung Up Jovan Belcher’s Jersey in His Locker Before Panthers Game

Everyone handles tragedies like the one that occurred in Kansas City this weekend differently.

Yes, Jovan Belcher was apparently a murderer who took the life of an innocent woman before taking his own; but that sort of honest assessment that can easily be made by those of us with no relationship to anyone involved shouldn’t be forced on people who do have a relationship with someone involved. Those people need to come to their own conclusions whenever they are able to come to those conclusions. And in the meantime, they should be permitted to heal in whatever manner they see fit. (Within reason, obviously.)

On Sunday afternoon, this picture of Belcher’s jersey being hung up in his Chiefs' locker room began making the rounds on Twitter:

A lot of people seem to have a problem with the Chiefs not erasing any and all trace of Belcher’s existence from their compounds. They believe that, 24 hours after the fact, the people who knew him, worked with him and fought side by side with him should have been able to rationally understand what he did and disregard him as a monster.

It doesn’t work like that.

Eventually everyone will come to terms with Belcher’s actions. And once they do, then they’ll do what's necessary to scrub any and all memories of him away.
