Someone Prank Called Mohamed Sanu and Told Him He Was Drafted by Bengals

| by Alex Groberman

The first rule of pranks is that they’re supposed to be funny. So if you ruin someone’s life, or hurt them or do something generally shady as a prank – you’ve sort of defeated the purpose right off the bat.

Apparently that lesson was lost on one special idiot this past Thursday night.

During the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, we saw plenty of players that nobody actually foresaw as first round talents come off the board. And so, on a night with as many surprises as we had, you couldn’t blame projected later-round talents for getting their hopes up.

One of those later-round talents, Rutgers wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, probably watched the likes of Bruce Irvin get snapped up in the top 20 and gave himself a better-than-originally-expected shot of maybe being taken in the first. Maybe. But secretly wishing something and having someone call you and tell you that it happened are two very different things.

According to Peter King (via Deadspin), as the first round was coming to a close and the Cincinnati Bengals were preparing to make their pick, Sanu got a call from someone identifying themselves as a member of the Bengals organization. He was then told that he was going to be selected with the No. 27 overall pick. Everyone in the room with Sanu got understandably overjoyed upon hearing the news, and his agent even sent out a tweet announcing it to the public.

About five seconds later, the Bengals stepped up to the plate and selected Kevin Zeitler with the pick that Sanu thought would be used on him.

It was all just a cruel joke.

"This is a great kid, I guarantee you, and someone played a cruel joke on him,'' Sanu’s agent, Mike McCartney told King after the fact. “It is unreal that someone would do that, but it happened.''

Again: pranks are supposed to be funny. Screwing with someone on a day they’re hoping to go into the NFL isn’t.

Here’s to hoping karma works its magic on whoever was on the other side of that phone call.

(Kudos to Deadspin for the find)
