Despite being 1-2 and coming off of a lackluster performance, the Carolina Panthers came to the Georgia Dome on Sunday afternoon ready to play some football. The Falcons found themselves backed up on their one yard-line and down two points with 59 seconds left and no timeouts. Only an elite quarterback would be able to navigate his team out of a hole like this.
On the very first play, Matt Ryan dropped back and heaved the football with all of his might and his trusted receiver, Roddy White, found a way to haul in a 59 yard pass to give the Falcons a much needed boost. Some plays define games, some plays define seasons, it hasn't been written yet but that play could define a career.
Now at the Carolina forty yard-line, Dirk Koeter's offense ran four more plays (an incompletion, a pass interference call against the guy covering Julio Jones and two short sideline routes to Tony Gonzalez and Harry Douglas) to get them to within FG range. That's when the man that can call alligators booted it through the up-rights for a great come from behind win and elevated the Falcons to 4-0 on a day where they didn't play their best football.
The mark of a great team is winning when you aren't at your best and the ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The Falcons are 4-0 and well on their way to becoming a great team. It will be mighty interesting to see the rest of the season play out.
