2012 NFL Draft: Washington Redskins Select Robert Griffin III with No. 2 Pick

With the second overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins selected Robert Griffin III out of Baylor.

Unlike Luck, who has consistently been regarded as a top-tier pro quarterback prospect over the last few years, RGIII sort of snuck up on a lot of people this past season. Everyone knew that he was a quality quarterback and that he made Baylor's offense look more legitimate than it probably would have otherwise, but nobody expected a Heisman-winning type of 2011 season from him.

There are a lot of misconceptions about Griffin. He’s not a Michael Vick-esque running quarterback. That comparison is mostly just made because he’s a black quarterback in a league where being a black quarterback means that you can only be compared to other black quarterbacks. The reality of the situation is, when they do opt to take off and evade the opposing defenses, Griffin is far less elusive than Vick is. That comparison fails on multiple levels. But while he isn’t as good of a runner as Vick is, Griffin is a better passer. Yes, he’s already a better passer.

Last year he completed 72 percent of his attempts, consistently delivered the ball in tight situations and made an admittedly solid wide receiving group look even more solid than they would have otherwise. There are some questions about his tendency to hold on to the ball too long, but that’s something that a lot of young quarterbacks are saddled with coming out of college. He’ll get past it.

Most importantly though, beyond all the football stuff, Griffin will be able to handle the attention that inevitably comes with being the marquee superstar of the Redskins. That organization is dysfunctional as hell to this very day – but he will undoubtedly be able to handle everything that comes his way in the next few years.

Good fit for all parties involved.
