2012 NFL Mock Draft: Fletcher Cox

| by

Cox can really move. He has the best change of direction for anyone close to 300 pounds. He played all over the line at Mississippi State and has the athleticism to do the same in the NFL. He always keeps his feet moving up field and he gets the push by getting inside the offensive lineman’s body.

He uses his arms to create separation and his constant moving feet, combined with his unique ability to change momentum, allow him to come off blocks for tackles. He has a decent spin move to get out of blocks but he has to sharpen it up. After watching Fletcher, I get the feeling that he will greatly benefit from NFL coaching. A defensive coordinator will find exactly what best suits him and mold him into a play maker.

Fletcher doesn’t have the explosiveness off the ball as some of the other prospects, which is odd, seeing how he moves so easily. He tends to drop his head at impact, on occasion. While his eyes are off the ball, the whole dynamic of the play changes and he finds himself out of position or pursuing the wrong ball carrier on hand offs, options, etc. He struggles when he comes off the edge and tries to dip the inside shoulder on a speed rush. He loses his power on these and can be taken out of the play altogether.

Cox could fit at the 4-3 defensive tackle position or the 3-4 defensive end. It really comes down to how the team plans to use him. His athleticism would be intriguing to me and as a rookie he could add depth in numerous positions.
