USC came into this college football season as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Everyone acknowledged that they were a little thin in terms of depth, but the talent on the roster was supposed to supersede that.
A lot of prognosticators had the Trojans battling Nick Saban’s Alabama team for all the marbles when it was all said and done. Well, the latter program did its part; unfortunately, rather than living up to expectations, USC instead chose to flame out in epic in fashion.
The Trojans ultimately finished their disappointing campaign off this week with a 21-7 loss at the Sun Bowl. The defeat put them at 7-6 for the year; five of their six losses came in the second half of the season.
Following the Sun Bowl, USC wide receiver Robert Woods announced that he would be skipping his senior year and entering the NFL Draft. When asked whether decreased looks played a role in his decision, Woods said this (via Larry Brown Sports):

“I mean if the coaches wanted to keep me another year they would have probably got me the ball, so that had nothing to do with play calling or anything. It was just, that’s just how it went this whole year.”
Marqise Lee, who is admittedly much better than Woods and deserved to get more looks, was quite clearly USC’s No. 1, 2 and 3 option regardless of who was playing quarterback.
The real question here shouldn’t be whether the Trojans could have retained Woods or not, it should be what sort of future he has in the pros. USC is beginning to build up a certain reputation for producing overrated skill position players, and if Woods flops, that may end up being the final straw for a lot of NFL teams.
