2012 NFL Mock Draft: Jonathan Martin

| by

Pros

Martin is fundamentally sound, meaning that if you taught someone how to use the right techniques, then he would look like Martin playing offensive tackle. He uses his arms to his advantage. If he gets them on the defender early, then he will dictate where the defender goes, like a puppet master. Martin pulls well and understands the defensive schemes.

Cons

When he faces the elite speed guys they tend to be too fast for his kick out. After this happens a few times, his technique gets shot as he just tries to get to the spot as quick as possible. When his technique changes, he loses his center of balance. This also leads to him losing on bull rushes after his kick out. Has a tendency to get beat towards the inside if defenders stay out of his grab.

Jonathan is a promising prospect but I believe someone will reach on him in the first round. While he’s a great college talent and will develop even more with professional coaching, I would be scared of drafting him early as he will struggle with defenders with a repertoire of moves. He wouldn’t be able to defend an elite, NFL pass rusher that can get the edge, rip, swim, and bull rush in any and every down. I definitely wouldn’t draft him to protect my franchise quarterback’s blind side, at least for a few years. I believe he would be a suitable right tackle that could develop into a left tackle.
