Horrible Game: Why is Mighty Nebraska Playing at Lowly Wyoming?

article image

On Saturday, the mighty Nebraska Cornhuskers -- hauling their steamer trunks full of tradition, National Championship trophies and unparalleled prestige -- journey on the road for the first time in 2011.

Where does this highly anticipated barnstorming tour take the No. 8 team in the nation? Are they landing in Alabama? Maybe South Bend? No, it must be Death Valley. Brace yourself, college football fans: The tough, fearless Huskers are headed to the storied confines of... Wyoming's War Memorial Stadium.

Word is, War Memorial Stadium has not one but two concession stands.

Let's cut to the quick: Nebraska's bizarre decision to play at Wyoming is one that should embarrass anyone who holds the Huskers near and dear.

This road game isn't just a worthless away date that does nothing for the program, it has a lasting negative impact on Nebraska football. Here is why:

1. Money. Isn't it all about the money? We've been re-taught this harsh lesson during the first month of the 2011 season. Who knows who will win the Heisman trophy. The real talk around college football is realignment and super conferences. And why is that? Follow the money train, son. It's what moves the sport -- plain and simple.

So when the Huskers chose to play in a stadium that seats a puny 33,500 fans (making it the smallest venue Nebraska has played in since God had a busy six days), the program willingly gave up hundreds of thousands of dollars -- if not millions -- in attendance income.  Here at Opposing Views, we've pointed out how the Huskers could easily fill a 110,000-seat stadium each weekend. On Saturday, the Huskers will play in a glorified dump. There will be 70,000 Huskers fans unable to attend the game because Nebraska is playing in a high school facility.

2. Prestige. Nebraska doesn't go to the weak teams. The weak teams come to Nebraska. Remember the roaring 1990s when teams like Colorado State agreed to come into Lincoln for a whooping every season? The Huskers never ventured to Fort Collins, did they? No way. You know why? Because it was beneath them. If you want to be a football power, you have to have a certain swagger. By playing on the road in a mid-tier (and that's being kind) team's stadium, this is what you're saying to the world: We'll take a game anywhere we can get it. Listen, are wins that hard to come by for Nebraska? If you're the King, act like it. You don't visit the commoner at his flat -- he comes to Buckingham Palace.

Please realize, in Wyoming's 2008 press release that trumpeted this amazing Nebraska coup, the Wyoming athletic department also announced: "a new series versus the University of Idaho, of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and Southern Utah, a Football Championship Series (formerly NCAA I-AA) program.

Wow, great company Nebraska. You're now being lumped in with Southern Utah.

3. Recruiting. In the hyper-intensive world of college football recruiting you try to get every edge possible. So when you show a recruit the upcoming schedules, how are you ever going to get him excited about playing on the road in Wyoming? Nebraska should be playing at Florida State or LSU -- big venues with epic crowds in electric atmospheres. Do you realize the Huskers only non-conference road trip in 2011 will be to Laramie, Wyoming? I'm not sure about you, but do you think this got any potential recruit excited?

4. Rankings. Nebraska has always been accused of having a weak non-conference schedule. It has improved somewhat -- but it still isn't where it should be. The decision to play on the road at a Mountain West school is beyond strange, and it will only hurt when it comes to weigh strength of schedule at the end of the season. Who knows how the BCS works, but if it's between the Huskers and another team that played tougher opponents, the Huskers will be left out.

5. Improving the team. You know who Oklahoma played this past Saturday? Florida State -- in Florida. It was hostile. It was crazy. And the Sooners prevailed. That signature win will undoubtedly make Oklahoma better this season. Nebraska needs to improve as well -- we saw that against Washington. But now it plays an inferior opponent that it will beat by 30 points. This will not improve the Huskers. This will not make them great or BCS worthy, which is the admirable goal of head coach Bo Pelini.

This will only make them 4-0.

One more thing, I meant

One more thing, I meant offense to anyone from Nebraska. I watch thier games as much as Wyoming and I believe that Nebraska is one the premiere programs in the nation and I look forward to the game this week and hopefully more in the future.

No offense taken. We

No offense taken. We Nebraskans know we could be in for an unwelcome surprise. It's crap journalism, but effective I suppose. This is my second post in response to said "crap."

So first let me say that I

So first let me say that I know that Wyoming is not the biggest program in college football, but in case you forgot we all play in the same division. Next before you go ahead and insult a team and state who is bending over backwards and spending alot of money by adding additional concesions and over 3000 additional seats to our stadium to make sure everyone can enjoy the game. Now with that said lets look at some stats. Wyoming true freshmen quarterback Brett Smith has led Wyoming to be 16th overall in the nation with a 69% completion rate and 797 yards through the air and 5 TD's. While Taylor for Nebraska is ranked 21st with a 48% completion rate and 480 yards and 3 TD's. Next lets go ahead and look at the well over four hundred yards that the Nebraska defense has surrendered and that Wyoming is one of the top schools nationally for forcing turnovers and and special teams. Couple that with the fact that Nebraska's defense has been struggling and that Nebraska is traveling to a stadium that is over 7,000 feet in elevation, (i.e. they'll be sucking on oxygen), this may not be the blowout everyone is expecting. Not that I am saying that either team will destroy the other I am just stating that while we are not the biggest baddest or most storied program in the NCAA we are very proud of the cowboys thus far. Now, one more thing that has been bugging me. I noticed that in the original post the writer mentioned only SEC teams. On that I'll reply with this in the Mountain West conference we have TCU, Boise State, previously Utah, San Diego State, (who obliterated a much more powerfull oponent last week). While these names may not mean much to the writer, or is it rather you don't like it when our no name teams come out of nowhere to obliterate bigger schools, (i.e. Wyoming stomping Tennesse in the mud 2 years ago). Whatever the case what's said is in the past. Either way I look forward to Saturday whatever the outcome. PS why are you whining anyways if Nebraska does stomp Wyoming it puts you to 4-0 and that much closer to a bowl bid.

Hey slipknot, War Memorial

Hey slipknot, War Memorial Stadium is a memorial to war heros, and one of the most beautiful stadiums in the country, hands down. You been there or just comparing to numbers? If so there are some stadiums around the country that dwarf Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Speaking of stadiums, while you were slobbering yourself over Florida State I noticed they will be playing at football powerhouses Wake Forest and Duke. Their stadium capacities are 31,508 and 33,941 respectively. I did not see any high schools on either schedule. Not sure about number of concession stands.

One of the comments above mentioned Honor between Nebraska and Wyoming. I couldn't agree more. Being from Nebraska, living in Wyoming, a Husker and Cowboy Fan, I find your comments insulting and a shame. You insult Wyoming you are insulting Nebraska. Half the people in Wyoming are from Nebraska.

This game is a dream come true for so many Wyoming fans you can't believe it. The excitement leading up to this game is like nothing I've ever seen. Believe me it will be fun for all who attend. If Wyoming gets pounded so be it. I bet they show up and play hard. They will be in fine company. I'm rooting for both teams, win - win deal.

I disagree with your assumption everything is about the money. Sure it's a factor and ALL universities rely on the income from athletic events. For the fans and the guys playing on the field it's about the game.

"Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory"

Do you know where that comes from slipknot? I'm as proud of War Memorial as where you will find this quote. Hope you find it someday. In the mean time, War Memorial only allows good sports, don't bother attending the game. I hope you understand all this, if not, you are a bigger moron that you come off to be.

Congratulations, Mr. M. As if

Congratulations, Mr. M. As if Wyoming needed any more motivation to play hard in this game, your submission is now making its way through the Wyoming message boards in Laramie. Sure, they might not win, but your piece will certainly be posted in their locker room. You've also made it a lot of fun for those of us in western Nebraska to drive over to the game and tailgate with those great Wyoming Cowboy fans. Maybe you should come over to that "glorified dump", put a sign on your back to identify yourself, and join in on the fun. In case you are interested, most eastern Wyoming fans also root for Nebraska-- at least they did until they have a chance to read your snubs and insults. The last messager is totally correct. You obviously live in the eastern part of the state and have no clue of the bond that exists between the west and Wyoming. In the meantime, despite the fact that you have lit some brush fires, those of us in western Nebraska will do our best to get along and root the Huskers on to victory. Considering our showing against Fresno State, not a team that I would consider to be a perennial powerhouse, I think it is a little stupid to compare ourselves to any other top team in the nation yet this year, let alone make fun of anyone else.

Evidently you must have also

Evidently you must have also failed elementary Georgraphy. Nebraska is a very large physical state with an approximate 125 miles that borders Wyoming on the west. There are many Nebraskas, including myself, who chose to attend UW, yet, our blood continues to run Husker Red. Sometimes some things are not always about money.

The initial considerations for this series was that one game would be played in Denver, can you figure out why? If you can't, then you really are intellectually challenged.

Certainly Wyo U can use the money generated from two trips to NU; but, there is also a certain degree of honor between these two states.

A third point is one that may be somewhat unique in today's athletic realms. Tom Osborne, NU Athletic Director is a native Nebraskan, the rest of his history is obvious. Tom Burman, UW Athletic Director is a UW grad. Isn't that rather unique?

Possibly, they understand the attraction wherein today's large population of intellectual morons would not have a clue.

To get Nebraska to agree to

To get Nebraska to agree to come to Larmie, Wyoming had to agree to go to Lincoln twice. The going price for any school to come to Lincoln and the Huskers not return the trip is between 700,000 to 900,000 dollars, and rising. Yes this season they are giving up roughly 3.5 million by playing in Larmie, but in the future they will have two home games, making about 7 million, and not dole out nearly a million to have a warm up game. So if they just payed Wyoming not to go to Larmie, they end up with around 2.5 million, by going there once and getting the two home games, they pocket nearly 7 million, I don't know about you, but I think they make out ok. And don't forget the rest of OU's non-conference opponents, Tulsa and Ball State, which I am sure they payed a pretty penny to show up in Norman for a beat down. Also Texas traveled to Larmie two seasons ago, and they are about as big as you get in college football, bet Wyoming would have even let the Longhorns broadcast that game had the Longhorn Network been around. And do not knock the Mountain West Conference, I am sure Boisie, TCU and even Air Force scare the hell out of most big schools and if they can do it, why not any of these other small schools? Not saying Wyoming and New Mexico and BCS bound, but anything can, and does happen. I am about as Big Red as you can get, but I think this is a trap game for NU, are they bigger, faster, and stronger than Wyoming, but not all we are cracked up to be on defense, and the T-Mart is always open for turnovers, and could be looking forward to the night game in Madison. Just looking at this from the surface, I get your point, but it is much, much deeper than big ole Nebraska caving and going to Larmie.

Can you send me the link to

Can you send me the link to the article you wrote when Texas played a home and away series with Wyoming in 2009/2010?

I'm sure it has had a devastating effect on their prestige and recruiting too...

Get over yourself

Get over yourself McNutsy.

Your column is an insult to all the Wyoming kids that will play their butts off to beat Nebraska this weekend. Will they... probably not; I sure as heck hope not. But this kind of crap journalism is a sad product of our times where "opinion" somehow gets labeled "news". There is no doubt that Nebraska has scheduled some pansy pre-conference teams in the past but this is not a bad schedule - Fresno State hung with Cal before they hung with Nebraska, and Washington will make waves in the Pac 12 this year without a doubt. Obviously Tennessee Chat is a lightweight, but it's not like Nebraska's the only team scheduling warm-up games. Are we supposed to blow kisses to Boise State because they start off the season with Georgia... that's not such an amazing accomplishment when you consider every one in their conference play will be the equivalent or less than of Wyoming.

Crap writing like this makes me wish the Cowboys duct taped you to a tackling dummy. This is not a talentless team we're playing. For cripes sake, Wisconsin's playing South Dakota... and they're ranked no. 5 in the country. Where's the fair and balanced yellow journalism, McNutsy? And in lieu of that, where's the frickin' talent. Hell, I'd settle for entertainment. If you're gonna piss me off, you could at least entertain me while doing so.

Hey McNutty, nice piece of

Hey McNutty, nice piece of journalistic work! You have all the qualifications of working for most any tabloid: facts not all in order, process of scheduling not understood, lack of knowledge on subject, etc., etc. I will look forward to more of your work in the future so that I can feel just a little better about myself. When I feel like I'm the most ignorant person on earth, I'll remember you, and my day will brighten! Thanks!

Nice call out of Mr. McNulty

Nice call out of Mr. McNulty Spence. The internet/open media can be rewarding and frustrating. Great for the Arab Spring to obtain real time data on events, bad for those that feel they are legitimate journalists. Aaah, take McNulty's ramblings for what they are worth, a "Flood" of useless info.

You should do some research

You should do some research before you come out & write garbage like this. First off NU had to fill this spot in short notice. Most teams schedules are set more then 2-3 years in advance. This game was also more about giving western nebraska fans a chance to attend a game. This game is much closer for them to attend then a game in Lincoln. Also we share a common coach. You might have heard of him Bob Devaney. Just an fyi NU has home & aways scheduled with UCLA, Miami & Tennessee.

Huskeriniowa's picture

Garbage is right. If there is

Garbage is right. If there is a good thing about UNL going to WY like you said it about Bob Devaney. Bob came to UNL in 1962 so 1961 was his last year in WY that would to 50 years ago this year. So I don't know if Dr Tom plan it or not but can you think of a better way to thank Bob. Hope someone has a (thank you for 50 years Bob) sign at the game.
