2-1 week brings the year to date record on plays to 15-6 (71.43%). 2 wins on the opinion picks improves that record to 9-4-1. Let’s try to keep this thing going.
Big 10 Football Picks – Week # 10
Play of the Week
Indiana (-2) over Iowa
This is a game between 2 programs going in opposite directions. Kirk Ferentz has had a fair amount of success at Iowa, but this program is stale and going nowhere. The Hawkeyes have failed to break the 20 point barrier in each of their last 3 games and 5 times total in 2012. The Iowa offense is just flat bad. I thought before the season started that with quarterback James Vandenberg and a couple of weapons returning at wide receiver, that Iowa would be able to put points on the board. I was wrong. Indiana is the opposite.
Second year coach Kevin Wilson has started to turn the Hoosier into a respectable Big Ten program. Indiana has played everyone tough and in two league home games, the Hoosiers took both Michigan State and Ohio State to the wire. IU has overcome the loss of standout quarterback Tre Roberson to injury and is putting up 34 points per game in league play. I look the Hoosiers to continue to score and Iowa will not be able to keep up. I will have 2 units on the Hoosiers laying up to 3 points. If this game ends up back at a pick, this will become a 3 unit play.
Michigan State (+1.5) over Nebraska
Michigan State quarterback Andrew Maxwell had a break through last week against Wisconsin. The junior went 8-9 on a game tying touchdown drive in the final minute to send the game to overtime. Maxwell then threw a touchdown to win the game. The win was big as the Badgers do not lose at home.
The Spartans’ win snapped a 21 game home winning for Wisconsin. The big reason for the win was the run defense of MSU. Michigan State held the vaunted Badger running attack to just 19 yards in the game. That run defense, along with the improved play of Maxwell, leads to believe in Michigan State this week against Nebraska. I will take the Spartans getting points at home for 1 unit.
Ohio State (-27.5) over Illinois
I hate to give this many points, but sometimes it is warranted. These teams are in two different classes. Ohio State is not quite an elite team on the national scene, but in the Big Ten they appear to be. The Buckeyes have been scoring points on a regular basis this season, but in the last few weeks, the defense has started to play at a higher level. This is bad news for Illinois.
The Illini are struggling mightily to score as they have put up a total of 38 points in 4 conference games. Ohio State is going into a bye so I don’t look for Urban Meyer to call off the dogs early in this one. Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde run wild and the Buckeye defense or special teams puts up a score as OSU rolls to 10-0. This is a 1 unit play on the Buckeyes.
