Notre Dame is moving from the Big East to the ACC in all sports besides the only one that people actually care about.
On Wednesday, ACC and Notre Dame officials announced that while the Fighting Irish would in fact play five football games against league competition on a yearly basis, the football team will remain independent. In a statement, ACC Commissioner John Swofford said this move was "a terrific milestone in the evolution of the ACC and showcases tremendous solidarity and vision by our Council of Presidents."
Despite the fact that his school would now be facing some very, very, very legitimate basketball competition in its new conference, Notre Dame President, Rev. John Jenkins seemed delighted with the switch.
"The ACC is composed of some of the most highly respected universities in the country, and we at Notre Dame look forward to joining them," he said (via ABC). "With a mix of institutions — many of which are also private, similar to Notre Dame in size, and committed to excellence in research and undergraduate education — the ACC is an exceptionally good fit for us academically, as well as athletically."

According to USA Today, because Big East bylaws require schools leaving the conference to provide 27 months notice, Notre Dame shouldn’t be able to join the ACC until 2015-16. That said, Syracuse and Pitt managed to jump ship earlier than that, so nobody really knows what will happen on that end.
"The University of the Notre Dame has informed us that it is joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports other than football," Big East commissioner Mike Aresco said in a statement released by the league (via USA Today).
"Notre Dame has been a valued member of the BIG EAST Conference and we wish them success in the future. However, Notre Dame's departure does not change our plans. We have prestigious institutions that are excited to be a part of the BIG EAST. We remain committed to making the BIG EAST stronger than it has ever been."
