A giant in the sport of basketball on and off the court (but more off), Yao Ming officially announced his retirement from the NBA in his hometown of Shanghai, China on Wednesday.
After being selected with the top overall draft pick by the Houston Rockets in 2002, Ming showcased a brilliant mix of brute strength and remarkable finesse throughout his eight-year NBA career. Despite petulant injuries from seemingly beginning to end, Ming was a permanent fixture in the NBA All-Star game as a result of his mass global appeal and international fanbase.
Ming missed 250 regular-season games over the last six years.
