The Spurs have won five championships in the last 15 years, but hey, who’s counting? Gregg Popovich, that’s who.
The Spurs rolled down River Walk yesterday for their NBA Finals victory parade, and Coach Pop let everyone know he’s well aware of just how much success he’s had in San Antonio.
Popovich counted out each of his five championships on his hand at one point during the parade, and seemed more and more surprised with each passing finger:
Pop has every reason to let loose and celebrate, as his fifth ring makes him one of only five coaches in NBA history to win five titles in their careers. You may recognize the other names: Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, Pat Riley, and old Minneapolis Lakers legend John Kundla.
The question in San Antonio right now is whether Popovich will be back next season to chase a sixth ring. He’s been relatively mum on the issue, but seemed to indicate that he’ll be back when asked about it most recently. The following answer came in an interview before the Spurs Game 5 series-clinching win.
“I don’t feel tired,” he said. “I’m tired today, but I mean in general. I’d like to continue to coach.”
