NBA Rumors: Ricky Rubio Clearly Wants a Lakers-Timberwolves Pau Gasol Trade

| by Alex Groberman

The Los Angeles Lakers may or may not trade Pau Gasol this year. While that potential transaction has obviously gotten a lot of press over the past few months, it isn’t clear that it is even possible at this point. The Lakers would want a lot in return for a future Hall of Famer; other teams would be reluctant to part with young pieces just to absorb an expensive, aging power forward with questionable knees.

It may very well end up being that Gasol stays in L.A. more because of circumstance than his team’s actual desire to retain him.

If the Lakers do decide that they want to trade Gasol, though, they have had two standing offers that will remain standing offers for the foreseeable future. The first one is from the Toronto Raptors, and essentially is comprised of Andrea Bargnani, Jose Calderon and whatever spare parts are necessary to make the deal work. The second one, the one that gets much less attention, is from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota is willing to part with Derrick Williams, Nikola Pekovic and other spare parts in an effort to pair Gasol with fellow Spaniard, Ricky Rubio.

That second standing offer, the one from the Timberwolves, probably explains why Rubio said this during a recent conference call:

"Pau Gasol has given the Lakers a lot and I don't feel he's getting enough in return, especially as far as confidence," Rubio said, according to HoopsHype.

"But he's a pro. If he goes to another team, I think he would make a contender out of that team. Wherever he goes, he's going to be fighting for the title."

Why is Rubio speaking Lakers issues? What business is it of his? Obviously he is lobbying for his organization to make a harder push for Gasol. Unfortunately for him, unless the Wolves are willing to part with Kevin Love (not happening), the Lakers won’t even consider making a deal with Minnesota.
