Heading into the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals, everyone thought that the Miami Heat would destroy the Boston Celtics. Sure, Miami had been mildly challenged by the Indiana Pacers in the second round, but it was nowhere near as bad as what the Philadelphia 76ers did to the Celtics. Given the mileage on Boston’s tires and the superstars that the Heat boasted, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Doc Rivers and Co. would flame out in something like five.
Then they actually played the games. And when they actually played the games, Boston legitimately looked like the better team in three out of the first four. At that point, folks reshuffled their predictions. Suddenly, the Heat beating down the Celtics wasn’t the foregone conclusion that it had been a week ago.
Or at least that’s how normal people thought about it. The powers that be behind NBA on ESPN, though, they weren’t sold. Here is what they posted shortly before Game 5 wrapped last night:
