NBA Rumors: Hawks Considering Trading Josh Smith to Celtics, Lakers, Magic or Rockets?
For a guy that is maligned and criticized as much as Josh Smith constantly seems to be, he sure does have a lot of potential suitors right now.
Smith, 26, is one of the more intriguing players you’ll come across in The Association.
On one hand, at 6-foot-9, he lacks the sort of size you typically need when your game revolves around banging it out close to the basket. On the other hand, he manages to overcome that size deficiency in two really great ways: 1.) his ridiculous athleticism and 2.) his amazingly awful shot selection.
That’s not to make it seem as though he’s a bad player; Smith has been and will likely continue to be a very good player. He just happens to be a very good player who is very good moreso because of his talent than because of his skill. And as we’ve seen countless times over the years, talent can come and go – skill is always skill.
According to ESPN, four teams -- who have a full understanding of his strengths and weaknesses -- are apparently looking into possibly making some sort of move to acquire Smith. Those teams are: Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets.
As reported by Marc Stein of ESPN:
But new Hawks general manager Danny Ferry apparently isn't ready to part with Smith right away.
Boston, Houston and the Los Angeles Lakers -- with Pau Gasol as the prime piece being offered in L.A.'s case -- have joined Orlando this week in making their interest in Smith known.
Of those four teams, only Orlando would be able to make the happen while in theory keeping their important pieces intact. Houston and L.A. would both have to send a pretty substantial amount of stuff back to Atlanta to make the deal work. And Boston, well, it’s unclear what they even have to offer at this point.
That said, don’t be surprised if Danny Ferry holds off on making a move right now. He still needs to decide what direction he wants to take this franchise in over the next few years, and that sort of thing requires a fair amount of consideration.
