Can Dwight Howard Step Up and Actually Help the Lakers Win a Championship?

| by The No Look Pass

Dwight Howard is now a Laker. I look forward to seeing him play with guys like Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and Pau Gasol.

And right now, that's all I want to see him do. It's not going to happen like that because it's not Dwight's nature but I just want to see him be quiet and play ball.

The whole "Dwightmare" thing isn't finished yet. After all, he's STILL going to be a free agent after this coming season and it's going to be speculated constantly until then (and I don't blame Dwight much for that; those are the rules... of course, he didn't have to take the option year). But the whole process to Dwight becoming a Laker has been embarrassing, to say the least. Just because he's a Laker now (especially since he went to the team that I have rooted for from the start) doesn't mean everything else has been forgotten.

The sudden about-faces. The indecisions. The 180s. The conflicting responses. How he stupidly took the option year for the Orlando Magic when all of this could've been avoided had he NOT taken it. How he held up the franchise with his actions and inactions. All of those were irritating. Suddenly, the jovial personality that we were so used to seeing from Dwight Howard seems like a sham. A hoax. I get that he's been given some "bad advice." But he's been a PR disaster ever since he demanded a trade last season. So to me, he's not as funny as he used to be. And while he's said the right things so far since he became a Laker, it's gotten to the point where I just want to roll my eyes and/or cover my face with my hands when he talks.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

Maybe he was frustrated. Maybe he just didn't know how to handle it and he came off looking like a douchebag. Dwight will be better served now that he's got teammates like Nash, Kobe, and Pau. But he probably won't get a pass until he gets that coveted championship ring. Winning cures everything because, at least, it shows us that they're dedicated to their craft and that they've sacrificed a lot for the betterment of the team.

I'm not going to go so far as to call Dwight Howard a two-face. But some will definitely perceive him for that due to his behavior and actions the past few months. It would be even worse if he leaves L.A. after next season. Dwight Howard has a lot of proving to do this season and beyond. Until then, Dwight Howard saying how loyal he is is nothing more than just a failed T-Shirt. I hope the city of Orlando gets an apology from him. I hope he proves me and all the other pundits wrong. And I hope Dwight Howard learns from all of this and does well in the start of a new chapter of his basketball career and his life.

I also hope that Dwight Howard's smile is for real.
