After an absolutely horrendous 2011-12 campaign, the Charlotte Bobcats needed the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. It wasn’t a matter of coveting something that they could could or couldn’t live without – it was a legitimate need. Of course, the ping pong gods (read: David Stern and the people who helped him rig the draft lottery) didn’t really care much about that. The New Orleans Hornets got the No. 1 pick, and the Bobcats got the No. 2 pick.
Now, at this point, it’s important to note that we’re actually very high on this year’s draft. We’ve raved for months about how deep the talent pool is, and how all teams -- not just the one who won the Anthony Davis Sweepstakes -- could seriously improve themselves by utilizing their picks effectively. Not everyone agrees with that assessment, though.
There are already murmurs about the Toronto Raptors looking to move out of their No. 8 spot, should the right deal come along. And on the heels of that, we now have a report the Bobcats may be willing to trade down from their spot, too.

There’s been talk that the Bobcats might be willing to move the No. 2 pick to Memphis in a package for small forward Rudy Gay, but according to sources, it’s just been talk. “It seems the rumors about Gay (being on the trading block) are true,” one source said. “And the Bobcats are one team that could take on his salary. But a trade would be complicated.”
The Grizzlies have made it no secret that they’re willing to part ways with Gay. Even though they just gave him a massive, ridiculous contract a couple of seasons ago, they’ve apparently come to their senses and realized that he’s not worth that dough. Plus, him and Zach Randolph just don’t fit – for whatever that’s worth.
We’ll see what ultimately comes of this, but it’s no coincidence that Gay’s name is popping up in trade talks at this rate. It would be completely unsurprising if he wound up in a different uniform next year.
