NBA Rumors: Portland Trail Blazers, Neil Olshey Not Interested in Steve Nash?

| by Alex Groberman

Remember those rumors about the Portland Trail Blazers targeting Steve Nash this summer that we heard so much about a few days ago? Well, apparently, that’s not going to happen.

For a while now, the Blazers have kept an eye out for a legitimate, long-term solution at point guard. Everyone knows this. Even though the team has been absolutely ravaged by injuries over the past few years, they’ve still managed to accumulate a fair amount of solid, promising talent that could evolve into something special given the right nourishment. But it does need that nourishment.

Again, it’s widely been acknowledged by fans and haters alike that if Portland had someone reliable to run the offense, the team could at least be a playoff squad in the West.

Now, obviously a 38-year-old Nash wouldn’t be a long-term solution to the Blazers’ point guard woes, per se, but he would definitely be the ideal person to hold them over until they do find that long-term solution. According to new GM Neil Olshey, though, that’s not even a possibility. Per Chris Haynes:

Speaking of the free agency period, Steve Nash to Portland may not be an option with Olshey at the helm. He's not interesting in bringing in veterans for momentary success.

“I want to make it clear, we're not looking for quick fixes,” Olshey said. “We're not looking for aging veterans that can slide us into the eighth spot and we're right back here a year from now trying to figure out what to do.”

The one thing that’s worth thinking about when considering Olshey’s pronouncement is this: does he (and, by extension, his team) really think that they would be better off not going after Nash, or is this just a preemptive strike to temper expectations because he knows Nash wouldn’t come to Portland either way?
