My neighbor Jerry who just retired from work at 62 was feeling mortal and decided to take a long European vacation. He was gone for the better part of seven weeks and just arrived home after the 2012 London Olympic opening ceremonies. He stopped over for a drink last night to grab his mail that I had been getting for him and we started to talk about MLB and what had transpired while he was gone. “What happened?” he said.
The Miami Marlins (undoubtedly the league’s strangest team) who had just built themselves a new stadium and started to sign marquee players to multi-year contracts have already started a Wayne Huizenga-like fire sale. “What’s with that? said Jerry.
“Did the Oakland A’s play the NY Mets every night and sweep the entire month long series? It looks like Oakland has about the same number or losses as when I left and the Mets have about the same number of wins!” Jerry exclaimed.
He went on… “The Pittsburgh Pirates are 16 games over .500?” “Ichiro is on the Yankees, Hanley Ramirez is on the Dodgers and Zack Greinke is on the Angels? “20-year old Mike Trout hasn’t even hit a speed bump?” “And what the hell happened to Josh Hamilton? When I left in early June he was hitting .366 21 HRs and 57 RBI, now nearly two months later he’s hitting just .284 with 28HRs and 83 RBI. Did he have a drug relapse or something? “
“I don’t know,” I told him, “but something’s obviously happened.”
