Oakland A's pitcher Grant Balfour and Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez dropped the f-bomb during the ninth inning of today's game.
Apparently, Martinez glared a bit too much at Balfour, who dropped the f-bomb, which was returned by Martinez (video below).
The two players came at each other, but umpire Gary Darling jumped in the middle. Soon, the benches cleared, including the bullpens, onto the field, but a mass brawl was averted.
Eventually Balfour and Martinez resumed play, and the A's won Game 3 of the AL Division Series, 6-3.
"Every time I make a pitch, I walk down the mound. That’s just what I do. He gave me the death stare and had the eyes locked on me. He knows what he’s doing. It’s all good. He’s a great competitor and a great hitter. I like a little fire. Obviously he does too," Balfour told MLB.com following the game.
Martinez wasn't quite as diplomatic.
"I mean, [expletive] him. I don't take that [expletive]. Not even the greatest closer in the game will tell you stuff like that. I'm not a rookie. To intimidate me with the little [expletive] like that? I don't take that [expletive]," Martinez explained to MLive.com.
