Justin Upton's Hot Start with Braves is Making the Diamondbacks Look Really Dumb

Justin Upton is on pace for over 97 HR this year.

At one point this year, Upton went 18 AB’s before his next HR. Every other time: 6 or less AB’s. Upton’s 9 HR lead the MLB, while he is also 1st in SLG and OPS.

Upton’s current teammate, who was really the forgotten player in the trade that included Martin Prado going to the Diamondbacks, isn’t having too shabby of a start himself.

In only his 4th full season in the Majors, 3rd basemen turned temporary 1st baseman Chris Johnson is leading the league in hitting at a .438 clip.

Are Diamondbacks fans cringing yet?

To be fair, the 7-player deal that sent Martin Prado and 4 minor leaguers (P Randall Delgado, P Zeke Spruill, INF Nick Ahmed, and INF Brandon Drury) to the Dbacks for Upton and Johnson is obviously one that will take some time to see exactly how even it was.

However, 2 weeks into the 2013 season, Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers has to be sweating bullets while praying the two players he sent to Atlanta cool down. After all, even though Martin Prado is the kind of player the Dbacks want in their organization, he will never put up the kind of production these two players are producing for Atlanta thus far.

Now, Towers came out a few days ago and defended the trade, saying, “I don't know if (Upton) would be doing the same thing with us….it was a deal that was best for both parties. He needed a new start. We needed a new identity, instead of being Justin Upton and the Diamondbacks.”

Obviously, this early in the season that is the only thing Towers can say. One thing is for sure though; if these guys (Upton and Johnson) continue to put up the kind of numbers they have been, Towers may be singing a different tune very soon…whether he chooses to admit it publicly or not.
