2012 MLB Trade Review: Marlins Send Hanley Ramirez to Dodgers

| by

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports has reported that the Miami Marlins have agreed to send Hanley Ramirez and Randy Choate to the Los Angeles Dodgers for right-handed pitchers Nate Eovaldi and Scott McGough.

For those left scratching their heads at the lack of return for the Marlins, understand that the Dodgers have agreed to pay the remainder of the $15 million Ramirez is owed in 2012, the $15.5 million is 2013 and $16 million in 2014.

In 96 games this season, Ramirez is triple slashing .246/.322/.430 with 14 homers, 47 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Dodgers brass clearly believe that Ramirez could return to his 2009 form in which he finished second in the NL MVP voting.

Ramirez could play short stop until Dee Gordon returns from the disabled list, at which point he will likely head back to the hot corner.

Left-hander Randy Choate has appeared in 44 games (25.1 IP) for the Marlins in 2012 with a 2.49 ERA (3.11 xFIP) and a 3.00 K/BB. Choate, primarily considered a matchup specialist, has held left-handed batters to a .148 batting average this season. Choate will be the second left-hander in the Dodgers bullpen.

The Prospects:

Entering 2012, Baseball America pegged Nate Eovaldi as the Dodgers third best prospect within the organization. In ten starts for the Dodgers this season, Eovaldi is 1-6 with a 4.15 ERA (4.36 xFIP) and a 1.70 K/BB (14.1 K%, 8.3 BB%).

Scott McGough is 3-5 with a 3.99 ERA and 5 saves for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the Advanced A California League.
