Did Derek Jeter Really Tie Willie Mays' Hits Mark?

| by

I see where the Associated Press is reporting that Derek Jeter tied Willie Mays on Thursday for 10th on the MLB All-Time Hit List with 3,283 hits. Consequently, since every major news outlet from ESPN to the Wall Street Journal takes the AP news feed, they are reporting it that way too. There’s only one problem. This report is incorrect.

While Jeter did tie Mays in hits with an RBI single in the seventh inning of Thursday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox, he tied Mays for 11th place, not 10th as there are still 10 guys ahead of him.

1-      4,256 – Pete Rose

2-      4,189 – Ty Cobb

3-      3,771 – Hank Aaron

4-      3,630 – Stan Musial

5-      3,514 – Tris Speaker

6-      3,435 – Cap Anson

7-      3,420 – Honus Wagner

8-      3,419 – Carl Yastrzemski

9-      3,319 – Paul Molitor

10-   3,315 – Eddie Collins

11-   3,283 – Willie Mays

11-   3,283 – Derek Jeter

This may not seem like a big deal unless you are one of the guys in the top 10 who has just been omitted… :)

The report has Derek chasing down Eddie Collins for 9th place at 3,313 hits. This too is a gaffe, not only because Eddie Collins is the guy currently in 10thplace, but because they took two hits away from Collins, as he really had 3,315 (see here as I’m not just pulling numbers out of my keester).

Jeter is currently 973 hits behind Pete Rose for the number one spot and with the DH rule not expected to be going anywhere, has a legitimate shot at catching him if he can stay healthy. At this point you have to believe that Derek’s goal is going to hang around long enough and do whatever it takes to surpass Rose and one would have to believe that the Yankees are going to do the same and give him that opportunity.

So we wait for Derek to get 32 more hits and tie for 10th place, again…
