Elijah Dukes was arrested by police early Thursday morning for reportedly trying to eat a plastic bag of marijuana during a traffic stop.
The 27-year-old former Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals player was pulled over at around 1 a.m. in Tampa for what officers cited in their arrest report was a mere traffic violation. As police approached Dukes, they noticed a bag of marijuana on his lap. Then, in what sounds like a desperate attempt to get rid of the evidence, Dukes went on to allegedly stick the bag in his mouth and try to swallow it – only to have cops eventually retrieve it before he could get it down.
As you would expect, police proceeded to arrest him and take him to the local county jail. Except for one minor stop, I mean. Somewhere along the way, they also noticed that he had a marijuana blunt stuck behind his ear.
Per the Tampa Bay Times:
He faces charges of tampering with physical evidence, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a cancelled, suspended or revoked license. He was also being held on two Hillsborough County warrants for driving with a suspended knowledge and operating with a suspended or revoked driver's license.
His bail was set at $4,750.
If Dukes’ name sounds familiar, it may be for one of several reasons. It could either be because of his totally unsuccessful rap career under the name Fly Eli. Or, perhaps, it could be because he’s famously been arrested five times in the last year. That’s right, one year.
Just a quick note: While this is obviously a funny, kooky story – drug addiction is a very serious thing. If you or anyone you know needs more information on addiction check out AddictionInfo.org.
