Bobby Valentine Explodes During Interview, Threatens to Punch Radio Host Glenn Ordway

| by Alex Groberman

Bobby Valentine will get fired at the end of this season. There is really no debating it anymore.

He’s done.

Forget that Valentine was unable to guide the Boston Red Sox as they attempted to reload -- rather than reboot -- at the start of the year. Forget that he lost the locker room very early on, and that he essentially forced management to take part in the biggest salary dump in sports history. (Which big picture was a good thing, but still.) Forget that his team is currently 63-74 and sitting comfortably in 4th place in the AL East.

None of that would have been grounds for termination. He could have overcome all of it. No, the reason Valentine is going to get fired is because he’s quite obviously quit on his team. He’s resigned himself to the fact that he’s a huge, irritating failure – and now he’s just waiting for Red Sox brass to pardon him by way of a pink slip.

On Wednesday, Valentine participated in an interview with WEEI in which host Glenn Ordway point blank asked him if he had “checked out.” It was an admittedly harsh question, but one that everyone was secretly whispering about anyway.

Valentine did not respond well.

"What an embarrassing thing to say," said Valentine. "If I were there right now, I'd punch you right in the mouth. Ha. How's that sound? Is that like I checked out? What an embarrassing thing.

"Why would somebody even -- that's stuff that a comic strip person would write. If someone's here, watching me go out at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, watching me put in the right relief pitchers to get a win, putting on a hit-and-run when it was necessary, talking to the guys after the game in the food room -- how could someone in real life say that?"

Yeah, that’s not how you handle a tough question.

Fortunately, Valentine will be put out of his misery soon enough.
