| by Alex Groberman

Brandon McCarthy was forced to take an early leave from Wednesday’s showdown between the Athletics and Angels after an Erick Aybar drive cracked him hard in the head. Team medical personnel and fellow players immediately surrounded McCarthy after the incident took place, however, he quickly sat up and, eventually, stood up under his own power.

Fans gave McCarthy a standing ovation as he left the field.

Left-hander Travis Blackley took over for his teammate and got Alberto Callaspo out to end the fourth inning.
