| by Emily Smith

Manchester United fan John Macharia jumped to his death Saturday after learning that the Red Devils lost 1-0 to Newcastle.

The 23-year-old jumped to his death from the seventh floor of a building after finding out that his team had lost. He apparently told his friends that he could not stand to see the team lose twice in a row.

Witness accounts suggest that the event was a suicide, though police are still investigating into the cause of Macharia’s decision.

Nairobi County police chief Benson Kibue said young people should realize that the English Premier League is only a game. He added that they should not be so emotionally involved in the game’s results.

“It is not the first time we are losing a young man because of the football in England,” Kibue said. “They need to know that it is just a game.”

Kibue also encouraged Kenyan football fans to support their local teams, rather than those in a foreign country.

“The football fans should enjoy the matches,” he said, “but they should not commit suicide since life is very precious.”
