Iranian Athlete Mehrdad Karam Zadeh Refuses to Shake Hands with Kate Middleton at Paralympics

| by Michael Allen

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was not allowed to shake the hand of Iranian athlete Mehrdad Karam Zadeh after she presented him with his silver medal on Sunday at the Paralympics GB.

The Daily Mail reports that Zadeh's refusal to shake hands with Middleton was because of Iranian culture, which bans public contact between unrelated men and women.

A spokesman for St. James's Palace said that Middleton was told about the Iranian culture, as she did not offer her hand.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the Iranian delegation told the Games' organizers that Zadeh was not making a political statement.

The Daily Mail reports that many male athletes from Islamic countries do not shake hands in public with women, whom they they are not related to.
