XFC Open Fighter Tryouts were held this past weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts with over 100 fighters in attendance competing for a spot in the East Coast’s largest promotion, the XFC. Fighters came not only from across the state, but from across the country as well. After evaluating talent from all over the nation, XFC President John Prisco and the XFC officials named Joby Sanchez of Albuquerque, New Mexico as the winner of a 5 fight contract with the promotion.
XFC has continued to expand its rosters in all divisions as the popularity of the promotion continues to rise. The XFC Bantamweight division, which has recently featured fighters such as Jarrod Card and Marlon Moraes will now welcome the addition of Sanchez. Fighting out of Albuquerque’s Chavez Dojo where he has been training since the age of 8, Sanchez has made a strong base from which he will begin the next chapter of his MMA career. The undefeated New Mexico fighter finished second in the New Mexico High School tournament back in 2009. Now 20 year old, Sanchez will be one of the youngest competitors to have ever signed a long term deal with the promotion. XFC President John Prisco is confident that he has found another future star.
“If I was going to give him a nickname he’d go by Joby “The Total Package” Sanchez. He’s good looking, athletic, aggressive, and very well rounded in all disciplines. Add the fact that he’s only 20 years old and there is a tremendous upside to Sanchez joining the XFC,” said Prisco. The XFC tryouts were a day long grueling process that included: cardio, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and sparring and Sanchez stood out from the very beginning. “I was focused on him from the start, there was something about him, the ‘it’ factor, and it showed throughout the tryouts.”
The official date for Sanchez’s debut with the promotion has not yet been set, but it is expected that the Bantamweight addition will make his first XFC appearance sometime later in 2012 or early 2013. With a track record of Open Fighter Tryout picks that include Marianna Kheyfets, Nick Newell, and Ian Stephens, the XFC has proven the ability to evaluate and pick fighters that will put on some of the most exciting fights in MMA. Joby Sanchez will now join the elite group of fighters who have won previous OFTs and begin to prepare for his XFC debut, which will certainly be the biggest fight of his career thus far.
