Why Winning a UFC Championship Was Important to Benson Henderson

| by

Benson Henderson entered the UFC fresh off a loss to Anthony Pettis for the WEC lightweight title. After working his way to a fight with Frankie Edgar for the UFC belt, "Smooth" scored the championship with a decision victory.

Now, Henderson and Edgar will go at it again, as the two are the main event for UFC 150 on August 11 from Denver, Colorado.

Henderson used his vast fighting skills to secure the decision victory over Edgar. By winning the title, he claimed a sense of validation for himself and his decision to fight.

"It meant a lot, on a lot of different levels," said Henderson during a kickoff press conference on Tuesday. "It validated my choice. I was gonna be a cop here in Denver, (but winning the title) validated that I made a good choice."

Despite being the UFC lightweight champion for several months now, Henderson said, "it still hasn't fully hit me. It hits me a little bit more every day." He plans on using the hometown crowd to his advantage against Edgar.

"I love feeding off the fans," Henderson said. "It gets me pumped; fighting here in Denver, I'm excited. I know I will feed off you guys."
