Vinicius Queiroz's Bellator 80 Loss is Being Blamed on the Referee
Vinicius Queiroz's (6-3) recent loss at Bellator 80 was an error by the referee, says his manager Josef Borges. Alexander Volkov (18-3) defeated Queiroz with one second left in round two via TKO. The win now puts Volkov in the Season 7 heavyweight tournament finals. Borges' major compliant was that the referee didn't allow Queiroz to use to ground game, causing the fight to be unnecessarily stood up several times.
A letter was sent to the Florida State Boxing Commission by Borges.
"[Referee James] Warring could have contributed to [and] altered the result of the fight after he ordered the fighters to rise up with only 15 seconds [on the ground] … in a moment that was favorable for Vincius," wrote Borges.
Borges has stated that he wouldn't attempt to overturn the result, but hopes that the referee will go back and reread the rulebook.
"I would like you to register my protest and I hope that Mr. James Warring will update [his] knowledge of the rules of MMA," wrote Borges.
After a two year hiatus, Queiroz signed with Bellator early this year. He had one UFC fight but was released after testing positive for steroids. His previous fight in Bellator was a submission win in the tournaments quarterfinals in October.
"MMA means also fighting on the ground," wrote Borges. "Getting a takedown and dominating the ground also adds points to the fight."
