Josesito Lopez is a respectable fighter who pulled off a huge upset earlier this year, but there was a reason he was such a heavy underdog heading into Saturday night. Canelo Alvarez is one of boxing’s biggest and brightest stars right now and, against an overmatched Lopez, he showed why he’s an odds-on favorite to eventually earn a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr.
When it was all said and done, Alvarez connected on 52 percent of his 269 total punches, and 64 percent of his 162 power punches. The fight was ultimately stopped with five seconds remaining in the fifth round.
After the match, Alvarez was humble but honest.
"Josesito has a big heart and is very brave, but I came in and did what I had to do and finished business," Alvarez said. "I'm not usually looking for the knockout, but tonight it was perfect."
And what does the future hold for him?
"I think I'm improving with each fight," Alvarez said. "I had a big responsibility tonight to all my fans watching around the world, and I think I did my job. I want the big fights now. (Miguel) Cotto, (Floyd) Mayweather, I'll fight them all."
